Reddit scan:First time poster on this subreddit - I've read the sidebar, and I don't think I'm contravening anything, but please forgive me if I've made a mistake, and I'll gladly try to correct for it.I've just got a website up and running, and after doing the basic "personalisation" stuff, I now need a logo, but I'm stuck on how to start. I've done logos in the past, and they weren't terrible but I admit they weren't that great either. What I've tried so far: arrangements of our initials, "wordbugs", images/sybols related to technology types we are interested in... but I've come up with nothing. So I'm interested in advice on how to break this down to get some decent ideas together. I'm decent enough with sketching to be able to create a proof-of-concept on paper and technology isn't really a barrier either - I'm more interested in learning what kind of processes you logo mavens here go through when you...

Reddit scan:New to the Makerspace concept. Found a local-ish group that I can go to learn more.Quick question. I want to make some gaming tokens first out of a 1/8" acrylic. What format do images need to be in for the Laser Cutters to use them, and what software would be good for a beginner to start with? Thanks! http://ift.tt/2wh63Jj by Towson Makerspace

Reddit scan:Hey guys,We are opening up a maker space, complete with 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC equipment. We will also have a computer lab. My question is, which industrial design software should be get? We have an instructor who is available to teach Rhino. However, some have voiced concerns whether that is overkill for a MakerSpace (and expensive), and whether an open source option would do just as well. What are your thoughts? Thanks http://ift.tt/2x5Pv3b by Towson Makerspace

Reddit scan:Being geographically distanced from mainland Geneva, the overseas territories in the Pacific did not venture down the exact same cultural pathway. That's not to say that there weren't distinct influences, but being surrounded by the Pacific Rim, the vanguard of innovation for many years, French Polynesia and other nearby territories had followed an entirely different route of 1970s-80s society: Maker Culture. The 4th Industrial Revolution brought mass-customization to the forefront of innovation and with it an extremist 'DIY' attitude to some of the more enterprising people caught up in the resurgence of maker culture. Economic innovation in French Polynesia had largely consisted of scattering SEZs across the territory's islands and upgrading energy and transportation infrastructure, essentially leaving the finer points of societal development up to its inhabitants. Already, there was a great tendency to "make do" with scant resources, and when ...

Reddit scan:Howdy folks! We have recently setup shop west of downtown at the dead end of Bergfeld avenue. The Spacelab is a creativity incubator, with an over-arching emphasis on open-source technologies - where folks from all walks can come here to learn and build ideas, collaborate with our peers, and ultimately cultivate a community which will empower everyone's personal growth. The best way to describe what were working towards is a mesh of a makerspace/hackerspace/garden/gallery/community event center. As we start opening up the space to the public, we would like to seek out any facilitators who would would be interested in hosting meetups or classes in the range of: start-ups, coding/computer science, bitcoin/blockchains, aquaponics/gardening, technology, 3D printing, art, design, machining, mechanical, etcTo give you an idea of a project we would most likely build in the near future: https://farmbot.ioWe have 5000 sqft, a large backyard area and a chicken coup. Reddit scan:Hey All,A while back i inquired if anyone was interested in a makerspace here in Astoria, we have diligently been working and are making headway in a lot of areas to make this a possibility. We would like to hold a community meeting, to hear about what people want in terms of classes, or machines, or just any great ideas you might have for us. A makerspace is as much community as a physical space. We are going to meet at QED on Saturday August 19th from 12pm-1pm. The address is 27-16 23rd Ave.Event is here: http://ift.tt/2fxz2Br also have a meetup group if you prefer that: http://ift.tt/2hRbB6E forward to seeing everyone who shows up! http://ift.tt/2fxz38t by Towson Makerspace

Reddit scan:I understand this might be a bit of a longshot, and sorry if this isn't the proper place to put this, but I'm wondering if there are any creative collectives in the DFW area? I'm interested in just about anything creative, from music to visual arts/lighting and everything in between.I'm a huge fan of creative groups, specifically The Madbury Club. I'm also a fan of musical creative groups like Brockhampton and stylistic creative groups like Street Etiquette.I've been looking at taking a few classes at Dallas Makerspace or community college classes to find a bit more likeminded people, but in the meantime I'd like to see if there are any likeminded individuals. I'm honestly open to anything, unpaid internships, assistant work, or even just talking, so if you or anyone you know is interested feel free to DM me! Thank y'all for your time. http://ift.tt/2vowYj2 by Towson Makerspace

Reddit scan:Our Makerspace is about to purchase a 100W 1390 laser cutter, and we want to make sure that we're not going to regret any of our choices. We've have a small FullSpectrum laser cutter that is controlled with RetinaEngrave, and we had a large laser loaned to us that was controlled by what appeared to be a derivative of LaserCut.The new machine seems to be controlled by a piece of software called "RD Works" which I've seen mentioned on this sub a few times. It runs off a controller that appears to be called an "RD Color" controller that looks like this.Is this a decent combination of controller and host software? Most of our vector design is in Inkscape or Illustrator, so as long as we can make file output from those work, we'd be happy.Any features we'd be missing out on that some other controllers or software might provide for a machine like this?More specs about the machine we're looking at, if you're interested:Cutting area: ...

Reddit scan:Title basically says it all. I'm primarily a woodworker, but I fell in love with machining about a year ago after the woodworking YouTube rabbit hole led me to the metalworking YouTube rabbit hole, which led me to the machining YouTube rabbit hole with guys like Clickspring and This Old Tony. Now I'm itching to try out machining. Only problem is that it's extremely expensive to get into, as far as buying your own machines, and I don't even have the room for that stuff to begin with. I've heard that you can take lessons at community colleges and machine shops, but there aren't any machine shops in my area, nor are there colleges that offer classes other than a very expensive and competitive technical college down the road. There aren't even any makerspaces, the closest is about an hour and a half away. Are there any other options for someone in my position? http://ift.tt/2fnvxgT by Towson Makerspace

Reddit scan:Hi,I am trying to open a brand new MakerSpace in Seville. We have a Fablab associated to the university but several makers and people trying to connect can't go into ( it's only for universataries, not open for everyone ).Therefore, an small team of really motivated ( xD ) nerds, geeks, whatsover in which I find myself are trying to open a new one. Could you help to give me some advice on running these places? Member fees? Equipment? Any good guide? Any community leader who can spend one hour talking about how they run theirs? This is a non-profit place, so it makes even more difficult, and the starter active team is about 10 people. Thanks in advance!! :) http://ift.tt/2ul3Abf by Towson Makerspace
