Reddit scan:TLDR wife looking for ideas for gifts, clubs, or other ideas for how to support awesome husband as he explores beginning woodworking.Hi all,I've been a lurker in this sub for a year. My dad was a jack of all trades and loved carpentry, and taught me a lot about tools, design, and building growing up. While I'm not a skilled woodworker by any means, I have a decent understanding of some basic principles and what kinds of tools work well for which projects. Prior to getting married I had acquired a decent beginner's collection of tools - band, jig, and circular saw; dremel; clamps;sawhorses; drill and lots of bits; hand tools (basics), and sander. My husband is super interested in woodworking but has less experience than me, and I want to encourage his interests without being annoying and didactic (especially because I may have a bit more experience but no real skill). I'm doing my best to give him ideas then stay out of the way while he learns through trial and error, trying not to make suggestions or direct him. I know that with new hobbies especially people like to explore on their own, and direction can feel like uninvited teaching. Also, we just moved to a new city this year (for my job) and he hasn't made tons of friends. So my question: any recommendations on how I can encourage him, provide support (maybe a new and versatile tool for him?), and possibly locate a club near me? Google hasn't been very helpful. Central New York maybe used to have a great club, but their web site looks deserted since last year. Local cc isn't offering any related summer courses, and no makerspaces here. Are there any great first timer books, you tube channels, or online directories of active clubs?Or just general advice appreciated. As a note, we do home improvement projects and carpentry type things together all the time, and we work together awesomely; he doesn't get defensive or insecure or anything when I have experience fixing things he doesn't. This is more about him exploring a new separate type of interest (aesthetic projects, not home improvement) and wanting to support that. http://ift.tt/2raqAbJ by Towson Makerspace
