Reddit scan:Kenmore is hosting a Better Block Sept 1-2. Here's a Ted Talk explaining what that is. This video is less interesting visually to watch, but it's the same guy talking at Rialto Theater on Kenmore Blvd about what we plan to do for Kenmore's event.Anyways, as part of the event we'll be building temporary outdoor furniture/fixtures for the sidewalks and shop fronts. BetterBlock.org has open source CNC designs/plans for creating these things out of 3/4" plywood. Jason mentioned that the Akron Library has a machine, but it looks like it's just a 3D printer on the website. I run a program for young teen guys and have decided building the furniture would be a great way for them to learn a skill and participate in a community event. But I know very little about operating a CNC machine nor do I have any connections in terms of access to one. Any advice would help.edit: Additionally the group will be trying to source materials (plywood and other landscaping t

Reddit scan:Greetings r/Technology!I am quickly running out of room due to family basically filling up every space with kid stuff and other things (story of my life, wee) - I have been looking for some type of space that I can securely store my tools, some lab tech stuff, servers, etc.. so I can go and work. I was thinking makerspaces or something of that nature, but I'm not sure they are open 24H - which would be tough to not have. Does that mean I can put slightly larger materials inside and I have a 24" x 12" cutting area, or does the material itself have to fit inside the 24" x 12" area?I have a specific project in mind where one of the components would be 18.5" x 12" and my local makerspace has a 24" by 12" cutter. http://ift.tt/2tl6gpm by Towson Makerspace

Reddit scan:It's a strong statement but an honest question. I'm an engineer, and struggled to get there. I've never been a particularly good student. My life in college was far more demanding than it is now or was when I was working unskilled part-time jobs. But, for all its vices, the pseudo-capitalistic society we live in provided me with strong a strong incentive to finish my degree, it was the best way for me to provide a reasonable quality of life should I ever have a family. I don’t particularly care if I’m ever rich, I just want to have enough. In a more needs-based economy, I’m not sure that people like myself would have the necessary motivation to make the best of ourselves. If there was an easier path to comfort, I believe I would have taken it. That might be selfish, but I’m just being honest. I’d still be tinkering in my garage (or some public makerspace or whatever) if I had the opportunity, but I wouldn’t have developed the necessary skills to perform all the

Reddit scan:Several years ago, some friends of mine and I set up a non-profit organization for a Makerspace. We went through the process of becoming a 501(c)3, we obtained a workspace, set up a website, recruited members, etc. and all went find until Christmas of 2015 when we had a break-in and everything was stolen. Since then I really haven't had the time to devote and membership has been dwindling. In May we worked out an exit arrangement with the larger organization that we were renting space from (another NFP) and we've moved our remaining property to another location. The remaining members (I officially quit this month) want to change focus and start a tool library, which is fine, except that that's not what we told the IRS or the State we were doing when we set up the NFP organization. We have a full woodshop, welders, 3d printers, laser cutters, a brand new industrial sewing machine, and a host of other toolsThis year, we'll have an electronics teardown. Were you the kind of kid who liked taking apart random household items? Do you have a kid like that? Were you not a kid like that, but now wish you were? We'll have a table full of stuff to take apart, and some screwdrivers, and let you and your kids figure out the rest.Elsewhere, there will be demos of laser cutting, 3d printing, and CNC. There's rumors of electric longboards and power wheels racers, but I wouldn't know anything about that. We'll also have the grill fired up, with brats and hot dog

My issue is that I can only find 1 review of the JellyBox printer.Make: ReviewThere is another "review" that simply extracts the key points from the Make reviewWe ended up with the Maker's Kit so I am in for the full DIY experience :D We upgraded to the heated bed and dual filament fans. I will admit I am ecstatic to get to build a 3d printer and get paid for doing so.We are happy to finally have a 3d printer to toy with but this was an impulsive purchase on my boss' end and no one else was consulted. I had been looking at a Prusa i3 since it is open source and that is a requirement here at the library. Our end goal is 2 or 3 printers for our Makerspace and I am not sure if this $900 pri

Reddit scan:I'm kicking around the idea of starting a non-profit in Los Angeles that's focused around computers/electronics.The mainstay is to take in older machines, clean them up, put Linux Mint on them (not Windows) and then offer them for sale at low prices for people who need/want a computer but can't afford or don't want to pay much. It'll be combined with an e-waste center as well as offer classes in computers (basic usability) for free or low cost. Along with that is hands-on opportunities to volunteer and learn how to disassemble, rebuild, repair, clean, and maintain computers. Volunteers can, if they want, trade hours for hardware. We also want to provide an open space for people to utilize as a makerspace/hackerspace. This is less a "we have a bunch of tools and materials, come do stuff with them" and more providing the space for people to meet and (funds and materials being available) donating extra hardware for people to use and experiment with.
